THE SIMMONS FAMILY and Fisherman’s Wharf Restaurants
Eagle Cafe, a San Francisco Landmark for Breakfast and Lunch on Pier 39 at Fisherman’s Wharf
Welcome to Eagle Cafe on PIER 39 of Fisherman’s Wharf, serving up some of the best breakfasts and lunches in San Francisco. This historic waterfront cafe used to be up the street on Embarcadero and Powell, but was moved to its current location on PIER 39 to be in the middle of all the amazing sights, sounds, and tastes of San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf.
Eagle Cafe, which opened its doors in 1928, is part of a suite of classic San Francisco seafood restaurants and the best breakfast and lunch spots on the Wharf, all operated by the Simmons Family Waterfront Hospitality Group. Warren Simmons, our family patriarch and PIER 39 founder, purchased Eagle Cafe from the Andreotti family in 1978, and, after gaining hard-fought approval from the Landmarks Board, put the restaurant on jacks and wheeled it down the Embarcadero from its original location to PIER 39 on Fisherman’s Wharf.
From a classic bar serving longshoremen and active-duty military personnel to one of the best breakfast and lunch restaurants in San Francisco, Eagle Cafe has a rich history and is a can’t miss experience for history buffs and foodies alike.
Almost a century after opening its doors, this iconic Fisherman’s Wharf breakfast restaurant is still family-owned and operated, from the original Andreotti family to the Simmons family. Eagle Cafe is run by oldest son Scooter Simmons and grandson Ryan, not to mention a core group of employees who have been with us for two to three decades. Whether you’ve got a craving for banana pecan pancakes, avocado toast, a classic California omelet, or a savory bowl of fresh clam chowder in a San Francisco sourdough bread bowl, you’ll find your favorite breakfast, lunch, and brunch items on the menu at this PIER 39 restaurant.
Since 1928, Eagle Cafe has been a welcome and frequented place by veterans and active military, as well as longshoremen who worked the San Francisco waterfront when it was primarily used for shipping. We are grateful for those who came before us and those who fought for our great country. Our restaurant decorations and historical artifacts are a tribute, and in some cases, gifts, from these very important guests.
All are welcome at our PIER 39 Fisherman’s Wharf restaurant and we look forward to serving you for another 100 years!
Warren Simmons had a dream to create a place for people from all over the globe to gather and enjoy San Francisco. This dream was turned into a reality when he conceptualized and created the famous landmark: PIER 39. Warren brought in his son, Scooter, and Scooter’s wife Nancy, to manage and operate his restaurant ventures on the pier. Today, over 45 years later, Scooter and his family continue to own and operate the most successful restaurants on Fisherman’s Wharf, including Pier Market Seafood Restaurant, Fog Harbor Fish House, Eagle Cafe, Crab House, Wipeout Bar & Grill, and Biscoff Coffee Corner.

PIER 39’s favorite restaurant switches from a breakfast menu to a lunch menu at 11:30 am, but we still serve a few breakfast favorites on our lunch menu until 3 pm. Problem solved! The breakfast options offered until 3 pm include menu favorites like our Breakfast Burger, Breakfast Burrito, Joe’s Special (2 eggs scrambled with ground beef, spinach, garlic, onions & toast), and Avocado Toast with an Egg. This last special is particularly popular as it combines two local favorites into one. We all know California is famous for avocados, but this dish is also served on a toasted slice of San Francisco’s famous sourdough bread.
BAY VIEWS, ATMOSPHERE, AND AMAZING FOOD
Another aspect that makes Eagle Cafe stand out is its inviting atmosphere. The restaurant has a casual and comfortable vibe that makes it perfect for families, groups of friends, or even a romantic date. The decor is simple and rustic, with a mix of wooden tables and large windows that let in plenty of natural light. The restaurant is also dog-friendly if you sit outside, so you can bring your furry friend along for a leisurely brunch or lunch by the Bay. It’s among many restaurants near PIER 39 that offer such a warm and welcoming atmosphere, but we will blow you away with our inviting hospitality!
On top of that, the service at Eagle Cafe is always friendly and attentive. Among the PIER 39 restaurants San Francisco has, Eagle Cafe is the top when it comes to hospitality. Our staff is knowledgeable about the menu and can make recommendations based on your preferences. We’re also happy to accommodate any dietary restrictions or allergies you may have.
When planning your visit to San Francisco’s most famous seafood market, why not grab brunch near Fisherman’s Wharf? PIER 39 restaurants are among the best in SF. Indulging in breakfast on PIER 39 is a wonderful way to start the day. When it comes to outdoor dining restaurants, PIER 39 is the place to go. From the moment you’re seated at an outdoor table, you can people-watch and soak up the fun atmosphere as you plan which of the neighboring restaurants on PIER 39 you’ll try for dinner.
Not only are the PIER 39 food and drinks absolutely delicious at Eagle Cafe, but the views are also spectacular. The views of the docks, ships, and stunning San Francisco Bay add to the allure and list of reasons why this is the best place to eat at PIER 39. As far as waterfront cafes in SF go, this is one of the only places you can actually face the view while you enjoy your meal. You won’t have to fight over the chair with the good view: there is an entire dining area where guests sit side by side, literally facing the bay while enjoying lunch, sipping cocktails, and taking in the harbor views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and Fisherman’s Wharf.
When it comes to breathtaking views at lunch restaurants, San Francisco’s hills offer bird’s eye views. Sure, you can go to Nob Hill and pay the steep prices to enjoy dinner with a view. But PIER 39 restaurants provide a refreshing sea-level experience at an affordable price. Whether it’s for date night or a family meal out, restaurants in PIER 39 offer a picturesque place to sit down and enjoy time together with loved ones.
BREAKFAST WITH A SIDE OF HISTORY
San Francisco lunch restaurants are known for their food, but not all can claim their historic legacy the way Eagle Cafe can. As one of the best restaurants PIER 39 has to offer for lunch, the history is an added benefit. When looking for a waterfront cafe, SF’s top-rated Eagle Cafe is equal parts delicious and historic.
Another point of distinction at this PIER 39 restaurant is the memorabilia lining the walls. Since it has been around the longest of all PIER 39 restaurants, the history is rich and they show it off with pride. Eagle Cafe has been a welcome and frequented place by veterans and active military, as well as longshoremen who worked the San Francisco waterfront when it was primarily used for shipping. On the walls, you’ll find an article about Eagle Cafe written by Herb Cain, hats from San Francisco service men and women, and artifacts from San Francisco’s rich history. This waterfront cafe continues to encourage visiting servicemen and women to leave their hats to add to the history lining the walls should they so desire.
SPECIAL EVENTS AT EAGLE CAFE
Eagle Cafe is also a great option for groups or special events. The restaurant can be used for private dining and can accommodate up to 52 people. We are happy to work with you to create a custom menu for your event, and can also provide a full bar service.
One of the best things about Eagle Cafe is that it’s open all year round, so you can enjoy our delicious food and stunning views no matter what season it is. During the summer months, al fresco dining is the perfect way to enjoy the sunshine and the view, while in the colder months, the restaurant’s large windows provide plenty of natural light and warmth.
